Survey Identifies Growing Acceptance of Open Source Solutions

Majority of Respondents Indicate They Plan to Employ Open Source in More than 50 Percent of Projects for Remainder of 2011

BEDFORD, Mass. – Aug. 9, 2011 – FuseSource Corp., experts in open source integration and messaging, today announced the results of a survey identifying the deciding factors for organizations choosing to deploy open source solutions. Administered by FuseSource to application engineers, architects, developers, designers, analysts, and consultants, the cross-industry survey investigated decision factors and deployment plans for the remainder of 2011.

“Open source solutions – as a category – are now legitimately viewed as a highly attractive alternative to proprietary, high-priced solutions from traditional commercial vendors, and in fact are creating new market opportunities,” said Larry Alston, president at FuseSource. “In our case, customers are seeking our solutions because they’re tired of being ‘locked in’ to software that can’t adapt to their needs, is overkill or requires additional payments at every step in the process. Now, by delivering open, flexible and affordable products, supported by enterprise-class service and support, our customers are adopting integration solutions that they never could have previously considered.”

Top line findings from the FuseSource survey include::

  • Open source is being considered for the majority of enterprise IT projects: In response to the question, “In what percentage of projects do you plan to employ open source solutions by the end of 2011” more than half of the respondents (51 percent) indicated that they plan to employ open source in more than 50 percent of their projects.
  • Flexibility cited as top benefit in adopting open source: In response to the question, “In what ways has the deployment of open source benefited your IT/development organization?” – increased flexibility rated highest with 73 percent of the responses, followed by shorter development time (58 percent).
  • Combination of cost savings and technological advantages driving deployment: In response to the question, “If you have deployed or are planning to deploy open source in the enterprise, what drove the decision?” – cost benefit received 89 percent of the responses, followed by flexibility (73 percent) and technical benefits (72 percent).

“The survey included companies from numerous industries including research, financial, government, energy, education, retail, healthcare, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. To register and receive access to a copy of the survey report visit: http://fusesource.com/collateral/145.
